Here at First Baptist Church in Union we are excited to tell you about our Awana program and we invite your children from two years pre-Kindergarten through high school to join us weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 – 8 p.m., September through April.
First, a little bit about Awana. The name Awana is an acronym that is taken from 2 Timothy 2:15. That verse reads: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” From this we get Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed – Awana. Awana is an international children’s ministry which is non-denominational in nature and whose mission it is to reach boys and girls with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve him. Awana was founded in 1950 and has seen explosive growth, now reaching 12,000 churches.
Our Awana evenings are broken into three primary components. Each clubber will receive a handbook to work from and during handbook time, your child will work from his book with one-on-one assistance from a leader, learning lessons from the Bible and memorizing verses. Game time provides an opportunity for the clubbers to exercise their bodies in our gymnasium and have some fun playing a variety of Awana games. During Large Group time, a Bible lesson or story is presented.
Our youngest club is Cubbies, and this club is for children who are two years prior to Kindergarten. Next we have the Sparks club from Kindergarten through second grade, then clubbers move on to T&T (which stands for Truth & Training) from third to sixth grade. After that we have middle school and high school groups as well. Each clubber receives a uniform and receives rewards for completing sections in their handbook. If a clubber completes a book during the year, there are additional rewards to recognize that achievement as well.
Whether you are a member or guest of First Baptist Church, a member of another church, or not a member of any church, your children are invited to Awana here. Our club is open to all children. I hope you’ll consider this invitation seriously, and if you have any questions at all, please contact the church for more information. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.
